"Nmperign's ... releases span the distance between barely being there and on your neck like a ton of bricks.

The 7 Things release comes in that most ephemeral of formats, the digital download, and it reproduces a concert that soprano saxophonist Bhob Rainey and trumpeter Greg Kelley played last year (2005) in England. It begins quite reduced, with a series of interrupted breath streams that exert an authority out of all proportion with their actual presence. And then it gets less, with tiny bird-like calls poking out of the silence like prairie dog heads seen erupting into a field from a football field away.

Such a trend cannot last, and the music eventually reverses flow. Not quite twenty minutes in there's a brief melody; like the lure that goads a fish into procuring its own demise, that tuneful moment pulls the listener into a cacophony that by rights should not be able to have been made by two men with horns. But hey, they also have microphones and steely resolve.
